THE WAY OF REDEMPTION

From the August 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science gives positive assurance of redemption from sin, disease, and death. In absolute Truth it is correct to regard redemption as already complete. In the sight of God all good is ever present. But it is also correct and Christianly scientific to work and pray for the salvation or redemption of mankind. Man's redemption as an established spiritual fact is mentioned by the prophet Isaiah, who writes (43:1), "But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee. I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine."

"But," writes Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 254), "the human self must be evangelized." The Christian approach to God acknowledges the need of evangelization. This dual aspect of redemption contained in these passages does not present any contradiction to the student of Christian Science. Christian Science is essentially Christian. It relates the human experience to the divine. It is also strictly scientific, for it sets up a standard of perfection as an established and foundational fact.

One who clearly understands that complete salvation or redemption has already taken place in his consciousness will have no difficulty in overcoming the claims of matter, including time and space. Christ Jesus possessed this understanding and thus conveyed himself from place to place instantaneously. In John we read (6:21), "Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went." He also rose from the grave, and after his resurrection he appeared to his disciples in his normal physique.
