In deep appreciation of the health, guidance, and protection which have come to me through the study and application of Christian Science, I should like to offer firsthand evidence of its efficacy. On numerous occasions during World War II the omnipresence and omnipotence of Mind were proved to me. Two of these instances stand out in my thought.
Early during the liberation of the Philippine Islands persistent and heavy rains filled the low places of our sector with water, created a morass of mud, and caused a nearby river to overflow its banks and to encroach on the battalion area. This added to the difficult living conditions in a combat zone and tended to lower morale by making impossible the usual procedures of sanitation. When over half of the organization was suffering from incapacitating intestinal disorders, I must have mentally granted reality to the conditions around me, for I also experienced a painful intestinal disturbance.
Many of the men in the unit had the Bible with them, but I had in addition to the Bible a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to which I could resort. As I had proved the practical value of these textbooks of Christian Science on other occasions, I immediately turned to them. By prayerfully reading and declaring the healing statements I found and by a determined mental struggle to claim man's heritage of dominion and completeness, I was able to return to duty after only a day's absence. This was a considerably shorter period than was generally spent by those who relied on the drugs supplied by the Medical Corps. I experienced no other sickness during four years of active duty in the Marine Corps.
