When still a boy in Warsaw, Poland, I used to pray that God would help me to become such a man as He wanted me to be. This prayer for obedience to God's will enabled me later to find Christian Science.
To me the main attraction of this Science was its persuasive logic, together with its teaching that matter is nothing and that God alone is substance. In my thinking there had been a predominant tendency to consider only my own interests and advantages. Being an intense egotist, I was unable to love anybody with an attitude of unselfishness, which is characteristic of true love. Although my material-mindedness was very dense, the true nature of man cried out for expression, making me more aware of the contrast between error and the truth.
My recovery through Christian Science from material-mindedness and egotism was slow but steady, and my blessings increased in proportion to my spiritual growth. During World War II our family was under foreign occupation in Poland, and we had many demonstrations of protection, support, and supply in those difficult times. I was well treated in a political prison and in a short time was released from there and later from a concentration camp. Through the protection of divine Love my wife was released after being arrested for lack of a pass by a soldier, although at that time persons caught without a pass were usually shot on the spot. In an effort to suppress underground activities the foreign police arranged frequent "catching expeditions," in which many of those caught were executed without trial, and the rest were sent to the concentration camps or were used for forced labor. During this time I was effectively protected by the treatment of a Christian Science practitioner.
