DESTROYING FEAR

From the July 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Fear follows the mortal belief that good can be absent from man. It arises from the mistaken concept that man is both material and spiritual, both evil and good. Paul realized that fear is not of God. Writing to Timothy, he said (II Tim. 1:7), "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Christian Science shows that because fear is not of God, it is unreal and powerless.

Humanity is yearning for deliverance from everything unlike good. In their extremity, many people have turned unreservedly to God and have found His eternal law of good, as revealed in Christian Science. Through this Science they learn that the material creation is not the real creation and that it is only men's false belief in it that leads to fear of evil, frustration, sickness, and sin. They see that man is the expression of God, Spirit; that God created him and is responsible for him, and that, as the emanation of Mind, man is governed by the law of divine Love—the only real law. Thus they find that good alone is real and substantial; that it is the heritage of the man of God's creating.

We must understand that the belief that evil is real and powerful is the cause of all the inharmony in the world today. Because evil is a product of the so-called mortal mind, it has no authority from God, infinite good, and cannot attach itself to anyone. Spiritual man, the only man there really is, is the expression of the one Mind, God, and is therefore immune from evil and from the fear of it. We must persistently identify our true selfhood as the man of God's creating.
