In May, 1930, I became acquainted with Christian Science. A friend of mine was very ill and had found that medical treatment was of no help to her. Knowing that a certain Christian Science practitioner had helped a neighbor, I made an appointment with her at my friend's request and took my friend to visit her, not thinking that I needed anything myself. How mistaken I was! The three of us had a happy visit, after which my friend and I obtained a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. However, we read it very little and did not understand what we read. Consequently the healing was slow.
After six months I bought a Science and Health myself and began to study in earnest. I could scarcely read enough to satisfy myself. One Sunday morning my friend and I went to a Church of Christ, Scientist, and we never again went back to our former place of worship. I began to analyze and understand the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. My friend did the same, and by degrees her healing took place.
We had both worn glasses for many years. When an experienced Christian Scientist told me that sight is spiritual, not material, I said that her statement sounded incredible, but that I would be glad to rely on it, and I put my glasses in my pocket. I did a week's outdoor sketching without the glasses, and when I returned home I put them away. That was over twenty years ago, and I have had no need of them since. My friend also discarded her glasses a little later.
