The Dream Is Ending

Luke 21:25-28

From the July 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The dream is ending, and the sophistry
Of sin is now a sinking galleon crushed
Against Truth's towering cliffs of purity.
Death's wild lament of sadness shall be hushed
Tonight, for Christ is calling home the lost
And lonely ones. This dream must disappear
As Soul's clear Science lifts the tempest-tossed
And homeless hearts from dismal swamps of fear
Into the star-sown heights of Mind supreme.
The mad unrest of passion, malice, war,
And greed is but a dream within a dream;
Impartial Love is evil's conqueror.
Upon the anvil of the sinless mind
Is forged the brotherhood of all mankind.

The dream is ending, and the vanity
Of sin is now a crumbling palace built
On sand and shadowed myth. Its tyranny
Shall cease as penitence destroys the guilt
In human hearts with purifying streams
Of reformation and resolve. The pride
Of sense must end its blind pursuit in dreams,
And moral courage turn against the tide
And traffic of the grim, chaotic night.
The masks will fall, the iron footsteps cease,
And Love will claim the fugitive in flight;
The hunter and the hunted shall have peace.
Where hell and havoc have no wings to fly
The disenchanted heart shall find its sky.

The dream is ending, and the savagery
Of sin is now a cloud diffused by day
And wind-clear light, for Christ's calm dignity
Has dawned upon the waking mind. The way
Of Science leads to quiet harbors deep
Within the joyful heart. But faith must ford
The currents of deception, scale death's steep
And torrid canyon walls, resist the sword
Of baseness, which can never penetrate
The armor-clad nobility of Soul.
The dream is ending now. Despotic hate
Must lose its throne, and hope attain its goal.
Beyond the shouting, sin-demented swarm
Love's thousand legions march against the storm.
