A very great need in our family led us to take up the study of Christian Science. A younger sister had been doomed by a physician's verdict to an early death. Because my mother expressed courage and declared that she would not give up trying to help this dear one, the physician, who was a kind man and wanted to comfort Mother as far as possible, said to her: "Why do you not try Christian Science? I have heard of people who have turned to it when all else had failed, and they have been healed. You have nothing to lose, and perhaps something to gain." Mother immediately inquired further and was led to call a practitioner. Following a regeneration of thought and a willingness to be obedient to God's law, the sister was healed.
After that first turning to Truth all the members of our family devoted themselves to the study of Christian Science. Church work followed, and as soon as they were ready for it, each one received class instruction. In my own experience there was a healing of nervous indigestion with my first reading of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. This healing was so complete that the difficulty was forgotten until years later when it was recalled by a friend, who had been impressed by the healing.
My next healing came one Christmas Eve, when I was experiencing a heavy cold which had congested the lungs to a frightening degree. Turning to my younger sister, for whom my mother had first requested Christian Science treatment, I asked her if she could help me. She sat down on the couch on which I was lying at the time and prayed for me. The last that I remember before I fell sound asleep was a great sense of peace and confidence. When I awakened around midnight, I was perfectly well and asked for something to eat.
