MORAL COURAGE

From the January 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Courage comes from the heart, in fact the word courage is derived from the Latin word "cor" meaning heart. Entirely unconnected with physicality, courage is a mental quality, giving strength and vitality to ventures which otherwise would be impossible. The Bible states (Josh. 1:9): "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Does it not give us courage to know that God is with us? We do not have to depend upon physical strength or resort to will power, which belongs to the material senses, to the claim that there is life and intelligence in matter. Reliance on God brings us into the spiritual realm, where infinite Mind directs beyond possibility of failure or danger.

Christian Science teaches that God is All, that He is Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love. Man is His likeness, ever reflecting His power and grace. One understanding this knows that he can do nothing of himself, but in humility recognizes that the Father does the works. As we claim our oneness, or unity, with Him as actually Mind's ideas we have courage to go ahead in the way He directs.
