THE DEMONSTRATION OF SPIRITUAL PERFECTION

From the January 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matt. 5:48). These words of Christ Jesus set a goal for all mankind. Wherein is this command to be obeyed? Material perfection there is none, for even the highest mortal concept is manifestly finite. Jesus knew that Spirit is the source of all perfection, and that spiritual grace and holiness unfold in thought.

The right sequence of human affairs stems not from the effort to attain perfect human living, but from seeking first the kingdom of heaven and trusting God to add "all these things" unto us. The ceaseless preoccupation with matter that would attempt to produce a human order of perfection is not scientific, for progress comes only as human means and methods fall away in our lives and the harmony of Spirit becomes more apparent.

The compelling force which brings harmony to human affairs springs from nought that is mortal, but is seen in a falling away of all human reliances and the revelation of the spiritual harmony of man. The physical healing of Christian Science bears graphic witness that improvement of the physical body comes not from that body, but from looking deep into Spirit, into the heart of Love.
