Christian Science came into my experience many years ago at a time of great confusion of thought, poor health, unhappy home life, and business problems. On page 114 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has written in referring to Christian Science, "It shows the scientific relation of man to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought." This statement proved true in my case as my problems were solved one after another through the application of the teachings of Christian Science.
Outstanding among the physical healings I have experienced through the years have been two cases which were diagnosed by physicians. One of these conditions was said to be due to a floating kidney, for which I had been obliged to wear specially designed abdominal belts. When the textbook was presented to me, I read it all of my spare time during the day and far into the night for about two weeks. Then I awoke one morning with a clear sense of spiritual wellbeing, and I thought, "Certainly if I am a spiritual idea, I am not dependent on these material supports." The belts and various medicines were discarded, along with my fear, and the healing of the whole disturbing condition has been permanent.
The second case, that of pneumonia, was diagnosed by a physician at the request of my family and my employers. The physician was so sure a more serious lung difficulty was developing that after his visit I found it impossible to control a flood of tears. Opening Science and Health I read (p. 211): "When a tear starts, does not this so-called mind produce the effect seen in the lachrymal gland? Without mortal mind, the tear could not appear; and this action shows the nature of all so-called material cause and effect." I saw instantly that I was not faced with a condition of serious illness, but only with a suggestion of mortal mind. I knew then that my healing would be accomplished under Christian Science treatment. When for business reasons a chest X ray was taken two weeks later it was found to be entirely satisfactory to the same medical authority.
