"Banish the belief that you can possibly entertain a single intruding pain which cannot be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way you can prevent the development of pain in the body." This statement by Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health, p. 391) pointed out to me the inconsistency of putting up with periodically recurring pains. In overcoming this problem I began studying the Bible and Science and Health more carefully, and I consulted a Christian Science practitioner. Our denial of pain, as directed in the above statement by Mrs. Eddy, and the replacement of belief in a material birth with the understanding that God alone is the creator of man banished the last vestige of the discord, and I was healed.
Several years ago I had a convincing proof of the protective power that is ours when we entertain spiritual ideas. While preparing some food in a new pressure cooker, I was mentally preparing to teach my Sunday School class the spiritual significance of the Ten Commandments and the definition of God as given in the Glossary of Science and Health (p. 587): "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." Suddenly the cover of the cooker blew off. The contents hit me in the face and spilled over my chest and arms. Instantly my consciousness was flooded with the healing presence of the Christ, Truth. As a matter of fact, my thought was so completely focused on spiritual truths that I was not aware of a knock at the door. My neighbor, not waiting for me to answer the door, entered. Upon seeing the effects of the explosion, she exclaimed, "What did you apply?"
I confidently replied, "I applied Christian Science." After she left I continued to pray, rejoicing in a calm sense of man's at-one-ment with God. At no time did I feel any pain, nor was there any trace of discoloration. The healing was immediate and complete. Even the memory of the accident was so entirely erased that when the neighbor returned a short time later, she made no reference to the incident.
