CONSCIOUS WORTH

From the November 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Happiness consists in being and in doing good; only what God gives, and what we give ourselves and others through His tenure, confers happiness: conscious worth satisfies the hungry heart, and nothing else can," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 17 of her Message to The Mother Church for 1902.

Let us consider together what conscious worth is and why it alone can satisfy the hungry heart. Who can be conscious of his worth? Can anyone? Can everyone? What about the ordinary man on the street? Can he be awakened to the consciousness of his true worth as a child of God? The answer is that anyone who knows his true selfhood to be the son of God must be conscious of his worth.

Christ Jesus was conscious of his worth to his Father, for he heard a voice from heaven, saying (Matt. 3:17), "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Jesus made it clear that he knew his worth, for he said (John 8:14), "Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go." He also said (John 14:10), "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."
