During an attack of pneumonia I called a physician who was a personal friend of mine, and who had attended me when I had had a similar attack the year before. He was afraid that he would be unsuccessful in treating the case, and he recommended another physician.
It was then that I acted upon my wife's recommendation and called a Christian Science practitioner for help. I took a firm stand by throwing away all the material remedies which I had clung to, and I relied entirely on the truth. The healing was accomplished in much less time than previously and has been permanent, because the fear of the disease was eliminated from my thinking. At another time, when pleurisy developed while I was in a distant city, I called a practitioner for help; and I was able to return to my home the next day, feeling free from the discordant condition.
These experiences were followed by a desire on my part to overcome the tobacco and liquor habits, and through my study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy this was accomplished without the aid of a practitioner. At first I thought it necessary to explain to friends and business associates who offered me liquor and tobacco why I no longer had these habits. Soon I found that all that was necessary to say was, "No, thank you." When one has been healed of depraved appetites, he recognizes the utter needlessness of such enslavement.
