Many years ago I heard for the first time a Christian Science lecture. I was deeply impressed by it and by the happy faces of the people attending it. The next morning I rushed to the Christian Science Reading Room to buy a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Christian Science textbook which the lecturer had mentioned frequently.
Until that time I had known little health or happiness. I had suffered from many diseases, including malaria and jaundice, which recurred yearly for a long time. My family had taken me to many doctors, who always treated me with great solicitude, but it appeared that I would never be very well.
In the first days in which I was learning about this wonderful religion, when I awakened in the morning my thought did not turn to my body, as it usually had done, to find just which part felt the worst, but to the splendid thought in the Preface of Science and Health (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." What a radical change in my thinking! On my completion of the first reading of the textbook an irritating skin disease, which several specialists had treated without success, simply left me entirely. The malaria and jaundice were healed, and for the first time in my life I knew what it was to be well and free.
