KEEPING ABREAST OF OUR CHANGING TIMES

From the August 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the most comforting facts which we learn in our study of Christian Science is the permanency of spiritual good. An old proverb, expressing the general view of mankind, says, "Times change and we change with them." In the light of Christian Science, however, we are able to gain a new view of what is taking place when speedy changes in the affairs of men confront us.

In the midst of these rapid changes the Christian Scientist has a distinct advantage in that he knows that the spiritual facts of being, which he is learning and demonstrating more fully day by day, are unchanging. Yet the practical, spontaneous application of these truths is ever new, fresh, and vital. As the prophet Jeremiah said of the compassionate healing activities of divine Love (Lam. 3:23), "They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 224), "As the crude footprints of the past disappear from the dissolving paths of the present, we shall better understand the Science which governs these changes, and shall plant our feet on firmer ground."

It is helpful to note that current changes in human thought, speech, and action do not affect or alter the perfect, unerring Science of spiritual being or its correct statement. However, eternal Science does govern changes in human thought, insofar as the changes tend in the right direction. Hence the most important thing in the midst of changing world conditions is to gain a better understanding of the immutable Science of being and the healing power that goes with it.
