PROGRESS AND OPPORTUNITY

From the August 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Opportunity! Humanity in general expects so much from this word but knows so little about it. Men insist that progress and opportunity are conjoined and that both are necessary components of life and happiness; yet they believe that the attainment of happiness and success is restricted by the vagaries of chance, outward circumstances, or persons.

In an address entitled "Obedience" Mary Baker Eddy discloses some of the obstacles to progress and opportunity and the way to conquer them. She includes therein an answer to humanity's question, "What is opportunity and progress?" She says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 117), "A progressive life is the reality of Life that unfolds its immortal Principle."

Christian Science comes to free those bound by a sense of frustration or fear of the future. It presents the positive assurance that there is actually no such thing as a personally restricted or loveless horizon of thought, no human tyrant, and no disappointment or obstacle of any kind. Through reasoning logically and scientifically, as taught in Christian Science, we see that a frustrated state of thought is really impossible because God, divine Principle, is All. He is the only creator, infinite Mind, divine Love, perfectly expressed by His idea, man.
