Social security, unemployment insurance, a guaranteed annual wage, though they are considered by many to be an improved sense of one's responsibility to his fellow men, are still material means of attaining so-called security, and these must be bargained and fought for. The hydrogen bomb of today is a fearful weapon. None of these things have as yet given to men or nations a sense of security that is adequate, all-inclusive, and enduring.
Where, then, can we find the security we are seeking, the security that includes everything, that never lets us down? Like the Israelites in their extremity, we turn to God. In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy gives us a clear explanation of God and our relation to Him. Through the study of the Bible and of Science and Health we learn of our true selfhood, and we see that we are not corporeal mortals, wavering between good an evil, but spiritual children created in the image and likeness of an all-loving, perfect Father-Mother God. In the first chapter of Genesis we are told that God created man in His image and likeness. Perfect God could not be the author of an imperfect creation.
It is not enough just to know and to accept these truths. We must claim our spiritual selfhood by practicing the Godlike qualities which constitute true reflection. When the task of reflecting good seems beyond our power, we have the assurance that by following the Commandments and Christ Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount we gain the spiritual dominion we need. God asks of us only what He knows we can perform. On page 180 of the textbook Mrs. Eddy tells us, "When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible."
