THE DIVINE UTTERANCE

From the September 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is recorded in the New Testament that those who listened to the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth were astonished at his wisdom, which transcended that of the scribes and chief priests of that time. In many instances Christ Jesus must have overcome his listeners' indifference and antagonism with the supreme confidence in and persuasion of his message. Furthermore, he proved by his works the truth of what he stated. Even the officers who at one time sought to arrest him and deliver him to the chief priests and Pharisees returned without their prisoner, giving this reason (John 7:46): "Never man spake like this man."

Jesus gave the reason for his unparalleled oratory when he said (John 8:38), "I speak that which I have seen with my Father." Jesus spoke not from the standpoint of academic training or personal opinion, but as divinely directed. His constant sense of at-one-ment with pure omnipotent Mind resulted in mighty utterances of truth. Thus it was that he spoke with the authority of Christ, Truth, which silenced the faultfinding lawyers, healed and saved many believers, and taught others how to imitate his marvelous deeds.

The Christ is spiritual, incorporeal, and ever present. The utterance of the Christ is active throughout eternity and can never be silenced by evil or time. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 332), "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness."
