Throughout the centuries since Christ Jesus demonstrated God's healing love to humanity, his followers have been concerned with evangelism, with spreading to all mankind the glad tidings of their Saviour's ministry.
The Apostle Paul, writing to Timothy, his co-worker, said (II Tim. 4:5), "Do the work of an evangelist." In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" is recorded the substance of a newspaper correspondent's interview with Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Referring to the Christian Science organization, Mrs. Eddy made this statement (p. 342): "Its essence is evangelical."
An evangelist is zealous in preaching the gospel and in bringing to the world the glad tidings of redemption. The essence of his work is in making Christian living practical in human experience. In "Retrospection and Introspection" Mrs. Eddy speaks of true evangelism as follows (p. 65): "Truth, casting out evils and healing the sick; Love, fulfilling the law and keeping manunspotted from the world,—these practical manifestations of Christianity constitute the only evangelism, and they need no creed."
