One of the most comforting chapters in the Bible is the ninety-first Psalm. Its loved verses come to one's thought innumerable times as the need arises for comfort, guidance, and protection. There is one verse whose meaning is greatly clarified by the light which Christian Science throws upon it. It is this (verse 7): "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee."
At first reading the statement might raise the question, "Why should God allow thousands to fall at one's side, and spare that one?" Christian Science reveals God's law, which is available to all. On page 227 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The law of the divine Mind must end human bondage, or mortals will continue unaware of man's inalienable rights and in subjection to hopeless slavery, because some public teachers permit an ignorance of divine power,—an ignorance that is the foundation of continued bondage and of human suffering." That which God has given to man, namely dominion over all the earth, cannot be denied one who understands this fact. Inseparable from each individual is his birthright of liberty and protection under spiritual law.
When we realize our exemption from any law but the divine, when we invoke in our own behalf the benefits of that law, we are at that moment standing within the divine protection of God's outstretched arm. Only as we give consent to the so-called power of false law and allow ourselves to be governed by it do we seem to forfeit the security of God's all-encompassing love, which is, nevertheless, there at all times to bless us in proportion to our awareness of its presence and power and to our utilization of divine law.
