"THE GREAT ATTAINMENT"

From the June 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Deep within the heart of almost every individual lies the desire for self-expression, for purposeful living, for some measure of attainment in his chosen field of endeavor. This desire is not necessarily based upon vanity or self-aggrandizement, because the sole reason for man's being is to express God, the divine Mind, who created him. No matter how much this truth may be obscured by aimlessness or dulled by frustration and discouragement, inevitably the noble destiny of man will shine through the beclouding material senses and find expression.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writing on page 428 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," points the way to "the great attainment" when she says, "To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear,—this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true." Here indeed is the highest of all pursuits, which sooner or later every individual must undertake.

The world today presents a chaotic picture resulting from misplaced trusts. Generally speaking, mankind have trusted matter to bring them happiness, wealth, health, and success. Yet it has never been proved true that an accumulation of matter holds the key to either happiness or affluence. Nor has it ever been proved true that manipulating matter or trusting inert, material drugs has ever been able to heal mankind of their ills. To look to matter for succor or satisfaction in any way is to build on the shifting sands of mortal belief. All there is to matter is a belief that something besides God possesses substance, life, intelligence.
