THE PATTERN OF PROGRESS

From the June 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The tiny seedling holds a promise. As it germinates, pale shoots push upward through the earth; then new leaves reach out to the sunlight, the stem lengthens, and at last the flower blooms in full perfection. How natural is this pattern of progress.

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 117), "A progressive life is the reality of Life that unfolds its immortal Principle." Christian Science teaches that God is Life and that Life is God. Infinite divine Principle is never in or of matter, never confined within the limits of mortal thinking. Life, the origin and source of all true being, is forever imparting itself through its own spiritual ideas. Man is Life's full and perfect expression.

Here, then, in God's unfoldment of spiritual good to man and the universe is to be found the pattern of true progress. This unfoldment of good is continuous, inevitable. It is the divine law, propelling and actuating all experience; it is God's holy purpose, which is individualized according to His spiritual design.
