"Thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness" (Ps. 18:28). When Christian Science was introduced to me more than ten years ago, this promise was fulfilled in my experience. Indeed this Science appeared to me as a flame of hope, lighting the candle of my understanding, resurrecting me from a dark wilderness. After I had had a mental and physical collapse and materia medica had exhausted its efforts to help me, I turned with complete reliance to Christian Science treatment.
At that time I knew very little about Science; therefore I clung to that which impressed me most. The patient love and fearlessness expressed by the practitioner inspired my faith and calmed my thought. Gradually I saw that the whole experience was the breaking up of worn-out beliefs. As one of our hymns expresses it so clearly (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 412), "The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking."
After several months I was able to return to my work, although the complete healing took further time and study. The lessons that I learned and the spiritual understanding gained made me realize that I had found the pearl of great price. Words are inadequate to express the magnitude of my gratitude for the healing efficacy of Christian Science. Through my study and application of it, new vistas of thought unfolded. In fact, it was as though an entirely new world had opened up to me.
