Christian Science was introduced to our family in the late 1890's when my grandmother was healed of a cancerous growth after she had undergone two operations, neither of which had been successful. When the condition presented itself the third time, the surgeon refused to operate, since he felt it was too advanced. This was the moment when my grandmother turned to Christian Science and received an immediate healing. She was an active worker in the early days of our movement and joyously helped all who came to her for comfort and encouragement.
My parents did not accept Christian Science at this time. Only when the clouds of disease and despair were very dark did my mother and I turn to Christian Science for help and comfort. I had been told by several eye specialists that, owing to an injury to my eye received in my childhood, it was only a question of time, possibly a year, until I would be completely blind. This diagnosis was made during my first year in college, and I was forced to return to my home because I was unable to read or study.
About this time my mother suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed on one side and very weak. In our extremity we wrote to my grandmother, asking her to come to our home, for we realized that Christian Science was our only hope. After she came, we started studying the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and with her help and encouragement we both began to improve.
