My husband, son, and I were in Japan from June, 1955, to June, 1956. Looking back over the varied problems we solved that year, I find that these lines from the Bible sum up for me the guidance we felt (Ps. 139:9, 10): "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."
Little did we anticipate when we left Yokohama that the last night of our journey home would so vividly dramatize these lines from Psalms. Fortunately our son flew home directly to New York from Japan, but my husband and I were passengers on the last voyage of the steamship "Andrea Doria."
We keenly felt the power and presence of God that night when another steamship, the "Stockholm," collided with the "Andrea Doria" in a fog. From the moment we felt our ship shudder from the impact until we were lifted to the deck of the "Stockholm," there was time only for prayer in action. We were grateful for the years of study and demonstration of Truth that had prepared us to meet this emergency. We had the strength to act as each situation demanded when sliding down a rope into the sea and being picked up by a poorly equipped lifeboat. We shall always remember the wonderful sense of the oneness of God and the brotherhood of man we felt as we worked and prayed side by side with people of different countries.
