WHATEVER Christ Jesus said had great metaphysical meaning and deserves our prayerful study. And this is true of his words recorded in Matthew (13:33), "The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened."
According to the interpretation given to this passage by Mary Baker Eddy, the leaven is Divine Science, which was revealed to her; and the three measures of meal represent science, theology, and medicine—three modes of mortal thought, which must be transformed by spiritual truth. It is interesting to the Christian Scientist, who is certain that Divine Science is the Comforter promised by Jesus, to find that "leaven" is from the Latin levamen, indicating "a means of raising, in the sense of alleviation, comfort."
Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 175), "The measure of Life shall increase by every spiritual touch, even as the leaven expands the loaf." This statement is encouraging to the Christian Scientist who feels that he is not accomplishing much according to the standard of spiritual comforting set by Christ Jesus. Everyone must develop in spirituality until he can subdue with the same authority that characterized the Master the false laws inherent in the material concepts of science, theology, and medicine. But no one should doubt the leavening effect of his spiritually mental touch.
