Christian Science came into my experience when I was a small child, and has always been counted as my most precious possession. The application of its unerring rules brought abundant health, happiness, and freedom in the years when my children were growing up, and during that time we experienced many beautiful healings. For the most part, these healings came easily and quickly, many times instantaneously.
About seven years ago a growth which soon developed to frightening proportions appeared in my throat. No doubt, had it been diagnosed, the condition would have been called a goiter. At first it withstood my every earnest effort to apply the rules of Christian Science.
One of the phases of the condition that had to be wrestled with was the thought that it was inherited, a member of my family having passed on with a similar condition. Mary Baker Eddy reminds us (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 22), "The human history needs to be revised, and the material record expunged." And farther on she says, "The real man is not of the dust, nor is he ever created through the flesh; for his father and mother are the one Spirit, and his brethren are all the children of one parent, the eternal good." When it became clear that as the image and likeness of God I was wholly spiritual and that I had never been born into matter and would never die out of matter, fear lessened.
