THE LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

From the September 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Suddenly, at the height of a storm, our house lights went out. We stumbled around in the darkness till we found a small candle. True, its flame was tiny; but it was light, and how welcome and comforting it was! It enabled us to move about in safety until the electric power was restored. So it is in life's tempestuous experiences; if we search, we find an ever-ready light to guide us through the hours of darkness.

The Bible, or Word of God, is to many people what the Bethlehem star was to the Wisemen, leading them to the Christ, Truth, which Jesus taught and practiced. For in this Book of books, God reveals Himself as the All-in-all, the alone source of all life, power, and wisdom. He is seen not only as the creator of light but as Light itself.

The spiritual light of Truth and Love forever illuminates Mind's infinite manifestation. Thus there is no dawning or dimming of spiritual light for the ideas of Mind, the sons and daughters of God. Immortal man, the real selfhood of each one of us, lives forever in the unchanging radiance of shadowless day and can never know darkness. Where God is, there is no night; for God is Light and is everywhere.
