The storms of materialism seem to rage strongly today as physically scientific achievements advance in speed and scope. In the fields of communication and transport, changes are rapidly occurring; but the development of atomic power and ballistic missiles, even if at present chiefly along the lines of destructive weapons, is opening up great possibilities of economic development and space travel.
Amid such changes the question may sometimes present itself, even to Christian Scientists, What of our church; how will it stand in such a changing world? We may find comfort and assurance in the words of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in "Miscellaneous Writings." There, on page 140, she states, "Built on the rock, our church will stand the storms of ages: though the material superstructure should crumble into dust, the fittest would survive,—the spiritual idea would live, a perpetual type of the divine Principle it reflects."
The rock upon which the church is built is Christ, Truth. Our church, then, is a spiritually founded institution rather than a material organization. To the Christian Scientist, the church is not just a material building in which to worship God, but is an institution through which to express God.
