MAINTAINING PEACEABLE RELATIONSHIPS

From the August 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Were relationships between nations dependent solely upon a balance of material power, there would always be an anticipation of danger—an uncertain state shrouded in fear of national safety. But it is evident that there are moral and spiritual forces operating which, when utilized, encourage friendly relationships among nations.

The time will come when these forces of good will be seen as entirely adequate to maintain peace. However, until they are more universally recognized and accepted it is essential that adequate armaments be maintained for defense. In 1908 Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of settlements of disputes between nations, said (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 286), "National disagreements can be, and should be, arbitrated wisely, fairly; and fully settled." And she went on to say, "It is unquestionable, however, that at this hour the armament of navies is necessary, for the purpose of preventing war and preserving peace among nations."

Christian Science makes it clear that if the people of one nation were possessed of a practical, spiritual comprehension of God's supremacy, this understanding would lead to wise action, which would outbalance the material power of an adversary. Each student of Christian Science, by holding to the truth of God's exclusive control, aids in maintaining peaceable relationships among peoples.
