WE MUST UNMASK EVIL

From the August 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." This advice of Paul's (Rom. 12:21) makes a definite demand upon each one of us when evil in some form is thrust upon us. The newspapers, the radio, the television, tell us of sickness, of calamity, of distress, and offer us nothing but material things for our relief.

Relief, however, is to be found not in material things but in spiritual facts, and these spiritual facts are presented in Christian Science. This Science teaches us that God is good and good alone and that He is the only creator, the only cause. Evil does not proceed from Him and thus is not real but is an illusion. With the background of God's allness and His perfection in our thought, we are justified in saying No to every suggestion of evil that attempts in its mesmeric way to have us believe it.

A woman who had been studying Christian Science long enough to make the statements that God, Spirit, is All and that evil does not proceed from Him was still mesmerized by the suggestion that she could not think correctly. The belief that evil is more powerful than good would seem to take possession of her in spite of her correct statements and arguments to the contrary. Finally, she decided to keep the arguments of Truth always in thought and to say No to every evil suggestion.
