THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS

From the August 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the Bible we read (Ps. 29:2), "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." What is this beauty of holiness? How do we "worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness"?

Christian Science teaches that true beauty is spiritual and is an important quality of God, Soul. It is individually reflected by each one of God's ideas. It is right that we should see and claim for ourselves and for everyone an outward manifestation of this beauty which is inherently ours as the sons and daughters of God. But before we can claim beauty or see it expressed in our human experience, we must understand what it is.

Is it boastful or egotistical to say, "I am beautiful," or, "I want to be beautiful"? Not if beauty is understood to be a spiritual quality as is goodness or integrity. "Beauty of holiness" surely means the beauty of good and spiritual thoughts. Every beautiful thought, every unselfish act, every expression of love, is outwardly manifested in beauty. Our human bodies and our material environment are the manifestation of our thinking. It behooves us, then, to shut out discontented, critical, and fearful thoughts, or if we have accepted them, to replace these with thoughts which are perfect and holy. Christ Jesus told his followers (Matt. 5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
