Testimonies of Healing

More than thirty-six years ago I was...

From the August 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

More than thirty-six years ago I was stricken with an attack of acute appendicitis. I was rushed to the hospital and operated upon. The doctor then told my mother that the appendix had burst and that gangrene had set in. As kindly as he could he broke the news that he could see no possibility of my survival. He added: "Only God can save her now. There is nothing that medical science can do."

He went on to say that he had heard of wonderful cures performed by Christian Science treatment. "However," he concluded, "I want to warn you that if by some miracle the child does live, she will have to stay in bed for at least six weeks or two months; and she will never again take part in any physical activity such as swimming or tennis. It is up to you whether or not you want to take a chance on keeping her in this world an invalid."

The thoughts expressed were appalling. However, I am grateful my mother was able to reason that if God could heal me at all, He would heal me completely. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and work was taken up. Thereafter no medication was given, and on the third day the fever broke, and I regained consciousness. In two more days I was able to sit up, read, and carry on a coherent conversation.
