DEMONSTRATING SPIRITUAL SELFHOOD NOW

From the December 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Rich inheritance awaits those who accept this reassuring statement found in the Bible (I John 3:2): "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

The spiritual truth of this statement is made practical through the teachings of Christian Science. Instead of accepting mortal selfhood as reality, Christian Science reveals man as the spiritual image and likeness of God. It teaches the falsity of the mortal concept of man as beginning and ending in matter. Instead of viewing himself and others from the standpoint of mortal personality, background, and physicality, the Christian Scientist is proving his own and others' individuality to be the reflection of God, who is defined by Science as Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, Love.

Knowing that spiritual man, one's true selfhood, reflects every Godlike quality, one can daily enlarge and enrich one's capacity for good, for man has an unlimited inheritance of divine wisdom, ability, strength, and love. As one accepts the fact that he is now the son of God, he can joyously expect to experience the good which flows freely from God, the Father. Understanding the inseparability of God and man and obeying the laws of God, one can gain freedom from self-imposed bondage to the material senses, and he can demonstrate man's God-given dominion.
