In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 559): "The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear." When I was a pilot in the United States Navy, I had some experiences which vividly illustrate the truth of this statement.
Early in our training we were told that an in-flight fire at night was one of the most critical emergencies one could experience. On one of my first night flights, I mistook the exhaust flames for a fire and landed immediately. However, I accepted the option to fly later that same night.
But while I waited for the flight, a fear of night flying started to creep into my thinking. The fear grew deeper and greater as the minutes passed until I could not control myself and began to sob. In my need I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner who lived over one thousand miles away.
