Over twenty years ago I became interested in Christian Science through the healing of a nephew. Physicians had diagnosed his trouble as an incurable neck condition. I began to study the textbook. At that time I had a bowel condition which had persisted since infancy and which materia medica had been unable to correct.
As I studied, the obstructing thoughts of fear, self-will, and self-centeredness were replaced with spiritual ideas from divine Mind. Some of these ideas are those given in Mrs. Eddy's definition of "oil" on page 592 of Science and Health, which reads, "Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration."
Within two months I was healed solely by reading the textbook, and the healing has been permanent. This healing brought with it the conviction that Christian Science is the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus. My spiritual sense was awakened, and I soon joined The Mother Church and one of its branches. The precious experience of class instruction followed.
