I Became interested in Christian Science in the year 1919. My husband had met with an accident on his way home from work. The next day a doctor who was called said that the spine was severely injured. He gave no hope of a recovery and said if he lived he would be a paralytic the rest of his life.
This verdict frightened me, but not for long. I had been taught by a Christian mother to believe that there is a God, a Supreme Being. The Psalmist's words (Ps. 120:1), "In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me," came to me. Suddenly, it was as though a light shone around about me, and I said, "God, I don't believe my husband is going to die." Shortly thereafter I went to my husband's bedside, and he assured me that he would live.
I felt at this time that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" and that God was talking to both of us. Soon after this, a woman living nearby whom we did not know at that time but who had heard of my husband's condition asked if she could come and talk to him.
