Christian Science first came to my notice while I was living in New Mexico, where I had been sent by physicians for tubercular trouble. Some acquaintances told me that God had sent this disease on me for some good reason. I hated the thought that God would do such a thing, and I refused to believe that He did it.
After hearing that a friend who had returned home from a sanatorium in which I had been placed was getting well through Christian Science, I started reading the literature with curiosity at first, but I gained gleams of light, although with some misgivings.
I had been reared in a Christian home and had taught in a Sunday School, but I was antagonistic to what I thought Christian Science to be. I asked God to deliver me from it if it was not the truth. Many ideas of Truth clung to me, and I could not dismiss them.
