WHEN DISCIPLINE IS NECESSARY

From the September 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Membership in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, provides a unique spiritual experience. The simple and dignified steps leading to and comprising membership, divinely impelled, bring splendid opportunities to work harmoniously with others who share similar aspirations.

Activity in a branch church proceeds in accord with approved rules of procedure, with which the members concur, assured that accepted moral and ethical standards of conduct contribute to the harmony and progress of the church. As the spiritual purpose of Church is held before the thought, everything of an organizational nature takes its rightful place in bringing this purpose to fruition.

Christian Scientists accept in general the spiritual fact that man is ever at one with his divine source, which is God, and so is forever perfect. However, they do not ignore the belief that, humanly speaking, they and those with whom they are associated are in various states and stages of spiritual growth. As members work together in accord with divine Principle, Love, their churches become laboratories in which human relationships are refined and assume a diviner nature as divine qualities are expressed humanly.
