If there is any doubt in the minds of Christians as to the goal of life, it should be fully cleared away by the Scriptural counsel (Lev. 19), "The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy." This is as specific a demand today as it was in the time of Moses.
Christian Science teaches that holiness is spiritual perfection and purity, which belong to man as God's image, as the expression of the Divine Being. But the human self must strive for holiness, for perfect harmony, health, and happiness.
The demand to be holy offers no compromise with matter or evil. It is a strict behest to put off worldliness, animality, and sensuality and to purify thought and life in accord with God, Spirit. Nothing is to be gained by delaying obedience to this behest. Mrs. Eddy is definite on this subject, for she says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 154), "Have no ambition, affection, nor aim apart from holiness."
