A Young woman who was reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for the first time was struck by the word Mind, so frequently used in this book. A doctor had recently told her that she could not be healed of an intestinal condition from which she had been suffering since childhood. Clinging to her last hope of healing, she continued with the reading, searching for the answer to the question, "What is Mind?"
She found the answer to this question on page 469 of the book: "Mind is God. The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind—called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality." In the ray of light which came with the knowledge that Mind is another name for God, she saw that God's law governs every function and action of man and is unaffected by human prognoses. That same day she noticed at mealtime that her fears concerning food had disappeared. The next day her bodily functions were normal, and soon afterward she threw away all her medicine. With the restoration of her health, her life was transformed.
In proclaiming God as the one Mind, Christian Science does not thereby identify evil with God, our Father, or with the real man, who is spiritual and perfect, the image and likeness of God. Rather does this Science deny all reality to evil. Christian Science is not based on the personal opinion of Mrs. Eddy, but on spiritual reality, the thread of which she found interwoven in the Holy Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation.
