From a very early age our son had expressed a desire for a career at sea. With this in mind, we entered him for a nautical college. We were told by the authorities that there was little point in sending him there unless he could pass a physical test of a very high standard, especially with regard to his eyesight.
We arranged for the necessary examination, and he duly obtained certificates showing him to be in perfect physical condition, with, however, one exception. There was a degree of color blindness apparent as a defect in red/green perception. The oculist explained that a certain percentage of all male children are born with this defect and that there is nothing that can be done to remedy it. This was a matter of some concern to us since the requirements of that branch of the Royal Navy which our son had set his heart upon entering were very exacting.
As a family, we are students of Christian Science; so we took up prayerful work for the correction of the condition. One evening the matter came up for discussion with the boy, and he was asked what work he himself had done about the problem. He replied that he did not understand how to work in Christian Science, using the Concordances to look up the spiritual meaning of words in the writings of our Leader.
