OVERCOMING DISCOURAGEMENT

From the August 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As Christian Scientists we rejoice at instantaneous or speedy demonstrations of God's power over sickness or discord. But we are sometimes faced with difficulties that seem slow to yield to our declarations of the truth of man's immutable being as God's perfect expression, and a great feeling of discouragement may come over us.

We read in one of the best-loved Psalms (139: 7-10): "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."

In accord with this statement, Christian Science teaches that the real man is never outside the infinite atmosphere of Spirit. Therefore no matter where we go, no matter how difficult the situation may seem to be, God, Spirit, is there. If we seem to be deprived of divine Love's protection and guidance, it is not because God is not present and in control, but only because we have allowed mortal mind to tell us that we have been separated from Him.
