THE LINE OF SPIRITUAL UNFOLDMENT

From the August 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The unbroken line of spiritual unfoldment runs from Genesis to Revelation. One who follows it is rewarded by being led safely through entanglements of pantheism, paganism, idolatry, ecclesiasticism, and other phases of materialism that have baffled men for centuries into the divine Science that reveals man's original, spiritual perfection, untouched by the claims of evil. But if one would follow this line, he must be spiritually alert, always on guard; and an understanding of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy will provide his preparedness.

There is a particular point where one must be especially watchful. That is where he goes from the first account of creation, which begins with the words, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Gen. 1:1), to the second account, which begins, "But there went up a mist from the earth" (Gen. 2:6). Beware of the mist, a symbol of mystification!

It should not be assumed that the second account is a continuation or an amplification of the first. This assumption would involve one in confusion and contradiction. Christian Science refers to such involvement with error as coming under the influence of animal magnetism, which is a scientific term for mortal, material sense. Under such influence the line of spiritual unfoldment would become indistinct, obscure, and seemingly nonexistent.
