The Christian Science Board of Directors announces the election of Carl J. Welz, C.S.B., of San Francisco, California, as Associate Editor of The Christian Science Journal, the Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science, effective August 1, 1961.
Mr. Welz is a graduate of San Jose State College, San Jose, California, where he received the degree of B.A., and of Teachers College, Columbia University, where he received an M. A. degree. His major interests were in education, music, and speech, and he engaged in educational activities for some years.
Mr. Welz has been a student of Christian Science from an early age. During World War II he served as Squadron Commander (Major AUS). Later, for five years, he was on active duty as a chaplain in the Air Force. Mr. Welz first engaged in the public practice of Christian Science in 1941, and since 1947 he has given full time to this work as a practitioner listed in the Journal. He has served the Cause of Christian Science as Reader in a college Organization, as a member of the executive board of his branch church and in other capacities, and as First Reader in Ninth Church of Christ, Scientist, San Francisco, California, of which he has been a member since 1947. Mr. Welz joined The Mother Church in 1932. He received Primary class instruction in 1937 and was a member of the Normal class in the Board of Education in 1958, after which he became a teacher of Christian Science. Mr. Welz will continue to hold his classes and conduct the meetings of the association of his pupils in San Francisco, California.
Mr. Welz succeeds John J. Selover, C. S. B., who has resigned as an Associate Editor of the periodicals and desires to return to southern California to carry on the public practice of Christian Science and his work as a teacher of Christian Science in that field. Mr. Selover has served the Cause of Christian Science in many capacities, including that of State Committee on Publication for Southern California from 1941 to 1952, when he was elected a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship. He was a member of that Board until 1956, when he accepted appointment to the position from which he is now retiring.
PROGRESS THROUGH CHURCH MEMBERSHIP
"Each day," writes a new member, "I feel more grateful that I was led to Christian Science." She continues, "In my membership I am encouraged to take forward steps and to participate in the work which the Church gives us."
Are you eager to take forward steps in your understanding and application of Christian Science? Church membership will help you to do this.
The closing date for the receipt of applications for the next admission is October 2.
Application blanks and information concerning membership in The Mother Church may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from clerks of branch churches or societies, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal or in The Herald of Christian Science, or from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
SUBMITTING TESTIMONIES
Convincing testimonies of healing in Christian Science are welcomed for publication from members of The Mother Church and from students who are not members. If possible, they should be typed, triple spaced, on one side of the paper only and with wide margins. A testimony should be concise and include only the important points necessary to tell of the healings. Thus more testimonies can be published. Testimonies should be signed by the testifier and verified by three members of The Mother Church who can vouch for the integrity of the testifier or have witnessed the healings. If the testifier is unacquainted with three members, his affidavit may be sufficient, but in this case he should, if possible, obtain verification from one or two members. The testifier should submit the verifications with the testimony. Complete addresses of the testifier and his vouchers should be furnished.
Testimonies should be addressed to Journal, Sentinel, and Herald Editorial Department, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
FUND FOR ARMED SERVICES ACTIVITIES
The thousands of Christian Scientists in the armed services, who are serving their respective countries throughout the world, are being helped by The Mother Church through the Fund for Armed Services Activities.
Christian Science Ministers are paid from this Fund. These workers conduct Christian Science services, give treatments, and visit and work with those in Veterans Hospitals who seek and rely wholly on Christian Science for healing. They contact the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who indicate Christian Science as their religious preference, giving them Service Edition sets of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and, in the case of young recruits, helping them to adjust to their military experience. Quantities of authorized Christian Science literature are distributed among the Armed Forces personnel.
The scope of the work is great, for The Mother Church has Christian Science Ministers and field workers placed in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea, and other countries. During the past year, approximately $300,000 was expended to carry on this work.
Contributions are welcome and should be sent to Roy Garrett Watson, Treasurer, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
