The solution for problems of inharmonious human relationships, ranging from what are called personality clashes to global warfare, is revealed in Christian Science. This solution will never be found, however, so long as the emphasis is on trying to mold a better humanity out of the imperfect clay of finite, mortal personality. Instead, thought must be turned away from this false sense of human selfhood to the true nature of man as the child of God. By one's individual acknowledgment of the true nature of God and of man's relationship to Him, one is led logically to a scientific and satisfying realization of the brotherhood of man.
When Christ Jesus was asked, "Which is the great commandment in the law?" he replied: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matt. 22:36-39).
How plainly the master Christian put the responsibility upon each individual! But how is one to love God and to love one's neighbor as oneself? Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 140), "We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over the corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God." Apprehension and understanding! Here are the watchwords of our approach to the Master's two great commandments.
