Christian Science was first brought to the attention of our family in 1912 when my father was healed of a serious illness. For eighteen months he had searched in vain for healing of a stomach condition through medical treatment and had finally been told that nothing could be done for him. Things looked quite grim for our little family when the banker from the adjoining town called one morning to see my father, supposedly on business, but actually to tell him about Christian Science.
My father promptly sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner some forty miles away and within two weeks was completely healed. My mother, who had been a semi-invalid for some years, said, "If it will do that for him, it will do the same for me," and she threw away her medicines. My father lived an active life for many years after that healing, and my mother's health was restored. She has continued through the years to study and rely on Christian Science.
It was not, however, until I went away to boarding school at the age of fifteen and my father gave me my first copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy that I began the active study of Science. As a child I did not have the opportunity to attend Sunday School, and a physical condition had developed which caused me intense periodic suffering. It was several years before my complete healing was manifest. But I was forced to study and to learn something of God and of man's relationship to Him, and for this I have been grateful.
