One of the cherished recollections of my childhood is that of my mother reading from a big book of Bible stories as my sisters and I clustered about her. I was impressed with the healings Jesus performed, particularly the one of the man whose bed was let down through the roof, so that he lay at the feet of our Master (see Mark 2). I asked, "Why can't we heal as Jesus did?"
I distinctly remember my mother's reply, "There are some people who believe they can." I realized she meant Christian Scientists, for we had friends who were of this religion.
These dear ones began bringing us their copies of The Christian Science Monitor, among which they would sometimes put a copy of The Christian Science Journal or the Christian Science Sentinel. I saved these periodicals and began reading them, being particularly interested in the articles for children in the Sentinel. Through what I understood of Truth, I began to experience healings. I had, for instance, healings of sprained ankles, a broken wrist and a fractured elbow, colds, sore throats, dermatitis, an intestinal ailment, and of a pain in my side which recurred whenever I ran or walked fast. In the latter connection, I dwelt on the Bible promise (Isa. 40:31), "They shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
