IMMANUEL

From the February 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Immanuel," is the Hebrew word meaning "God with us." Writing of her discovery of Christian Science in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says of the Principle upon which this work rests (p. 107), "This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of Immanuel, 'God with us,'—the sovereign ever-presence, delivering the children of men from every ill 'that flesh is heir to.' "

"The revelation of Immanuel" lifts the load of anxious responsibility from those who seek healing through the ministrations of Christian Science. It shows clearly that one's work is to become conscious of God's presence and of the fact that "God with us" supplies the truths with which we work.

Our greatest need is to know God. First we learn through Science to recognize what God is. We then accept and acknowledge His omnipresence. Acknowledgment of God's presence brings to light the power of God, because God's presence and power are indivisible. Understanding the Principle and rules of Christian Science makes it practical and applicable. The consciousness of the omnipresence of God, good, stills the tumult of the human mind, fulfills the spiritual desire of every aching heart, and heals the diseased body. It compensates for every earthly loss and satisfies the longing for peace. It compels obedience to the Scriptural demand of the Messiah, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28).
