OUR BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATIONS

From the February 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The word "benevolence" implies active goodness. Benevolence, goodwill, charitableness, must always find expression. One dictionary gives this definition of "benevolence": "love of mankind, accompanied with a desire to promote men's happiness."

The Sanatoriums of the Christian Science Benevolent Associations are located in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and in San Francisco, California. At these two Sanatoriums, which are operated by The Mother Church, those seeking healing in Christian Science and those desiring a refuge in which to recruit themselves spiritually find bountiful means provided for promoting their happiness and well-being.

In a high degree these institutions represent home and what home means: harmony, beauty, order, happiness, and quiet assurance of Love's ever-presence. Guests at these Sanatoriums are usually aware of this feeling of home and enjoy the beauty, order, and thoughtfulness expressed there. Often they are able to bring out more of this ideal sense of home when they return to their own homes. The Sanatoriums provide havens where, in the words of the Book of Job (11:18,19): "Thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety. Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid."
